Every October, dog lovers across the country come together to celebrate National Pit Bull Awareness Day — this year on October 25, 2025. It’s a day dedicated to honoring one of the most loyal, affectionate, and misunderstood breeds: the Pit Bull.

At Walking Wet Noses, we believe every dog deserves to be seen for who they truly are — not by the myths surrounding their breed. As trusted pet care professionals serving Fairfax, Vienna, Oakton, Chantilly, Centreville, and Burke, VA, our team has had the joy of caring for Pit Bulls who are nothing short of sweet, playful, and full of heart.

Why Pit Bulls Deserve a Second Look

Pit Bulls have long carried an unfair reputation. Misleading media stories and outdated stereotypes have overshadowed the truth — that these dogs are smart, gentle, and incredibly people-oriented.

In reality, most Pit Bulls crave affection, structure, and activity. When given consistent exercise, positive socialization, and loving attention, they thrive as loyal family companions. That’s why awareness days like this are so important — they remind us to replace fear with understanding and compassion.

Organizations like Best Friends Animal Society, Humane World for Animals, and the ASPCA have all worked tirelessly to educate the public and dispel misinformation surrounding Pit Bulls. Their shared message is clear: it’s time to see these dogs for who they really are — loving, loyal companions who deserve a fair chance.

Myth vs. Fact: Setting the Record Straight

Myth #1: “Pit Bulls are naturally aggressive.”
Fact: According to Best Friends Animal Society, there’s no scientific evidence that Pit Bulls are inherently more aggressive than other breeds. In fact, temperament studies show Pit Bulls scoring among the most affectionate and stable dogs — often ranking higher than many popular “family” breeds.

Myth #2: “Pit Bulls can’t be trusted around other animals.”
Fact: The ASPCA notes that a dog’s behavior depends far more on environment, socialization, and training than breed alone. With proper guidance, many Pit Bulls live peacefully with other pets and thrive in multi-animal homes.

Myth #3: “Pit Bulls aren’t good family dogs.”
Fact: Humane World for Animals emphasizes that Pit Bulls can be wonderful family companions when given consistent training, structure, and positive reinforcement. Like any breed, they thrive in homes that provide attention, love, and responsible care — and in return, they offer unwavering loyalty and affection.

How Exercise Brings Out the Best in Pit Bulls

Pit Bulls are strong, athletic, and full of energy — and that’s one of the many things that makes them so lovable! Regular walks help them release energy in positive ways, reduce anxiety, and build confidence.

At Walking Wet Noses, our professional dog walkers understand how important physical and mental stimulation is for every dog, especially high-energy breeds like Pit Bulls. Whether it’s a brisk midday walk in Vienna, a neighborhood stroll in Fairfax, or playtime in the park in Centreville, we tailor every outing to your dog’s personality and needs.

Daily exercise doesn’t just help Pit Bulls stay fit — it strengthens their bond with you and encourages calm, balanced behavior at home. It’s one of the best ways to help this breed (and all breeds!) shine.

Celebrating National Pit Bull Awareness Day

This National Pit Bull Awareness Day, take a moment to celebrate the love these dogs bring to our lives. Share a story, support a local rescue, or simply smile at a Pit Bull you meet on your walk. Every act of kindness helps change perceptions.

If you share your life with a Pit Bull — or any dog who thrives on regular activity — we’d love to help keep their tails wagging!

A Lifetime of Love Deserves Lifetime Care

At Walking Wet Noses Dog Walking & Pet Sitting, we believe our senior dogs deserve the same joy and adventure they’ve always loved—just at a gentler pace.
As pet parents, we watch our dogs grow from playful puppies to wise companions. But as they age, their needs change. That’s where we step in—with compassionate senior dog walking and in-home care designed around their comfort, safety, and happiness.

Even a short walk can make a world of difference for an aging dog’s health and spirit. Our goal is simple: to make every moment meaningful, keeping tails wagging and hearts connected through every stage of life. Learn more about our Daily and Monthly Dog Walking Club Memberships and how they help senior dogs stay active, happy, and loved.

How Aging Slows Our Senior Dogs Down

Aging changes everything—from how fast our pups move to how long they can enjoy a walk. But growing older doesn’t mean giving up adventure; it just means adjusting the pace.

According to the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), most dogs are considered senior between 7–10 years of age, depending on breed size.

As they age, you may notice:

Less endurance and slower movement

Stiff joints or arthritis causing hesitation to walk or climb stairs

Changes in weight and muscle tone due to reduced activity

Cognitive decline or confusion, especially in unfamiliar environments

The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) notes that regular, low-impact exercise helps maintain mobility, prevent weight gain, and support heart health in senior dogs.

Unfortunately, inactivity can accelerate decline.
Studies from the ASPCA show that dogs who remain sedentary experience faster muscle loss and joint stiffness, which can shorten their lifespan and reduce overall quality of life.

Even gentle activity can help counter these effects, improving strength, digestion, and mental health in older pets. Visit our Senior Pet Care Services page to see how we help support mobility and comfort through personalized care plans.

The Emotional Benefits of Staying Active

As our loyal companions grow older, their needs shift from energetic play to gentle connection and routine. But the love in their eyes, the wag of their tail, and the joy they feel when stepping outside never fade. We’ve seen firsthand how even the simplest moments — a slow walk in the sunshine, the sound of leaves under their paws, or a reassuring voice at their side — can lift a senior dog’s spirit. These small experiences do more than move their muscles; they nourish their heart and mind. At Walking Wet Noses Dog Walking & Pet Sitting, we believe that every stroll, no matter how short or slow, is an opportunity to give comfort, build confidence, and remind our aging pets that they’re still part of life’s everyday adventures.

Walking isn’t just about physical health—it’s emotional therapy. Regular gentle walks help senior dogs:

Stay mentally sharp through new smells, sights, and sounds

Maintain a routine, which offers comfort and stability

Reduce anxiety or restlessness, especially when owners are away

Strengthen bonds with their caregiver and human family

When we take our senior dogs out for a gentle stroll, we’re not just helping them stretch their legs — we’re helping them stay connected to the world they love. A familiar path, a favorite tree to sniff, or a quiet pause to feel the breeze can make their whole day brighter. We’ve seen time and again how a slow, loving stroll can brighten a senior dog’s entire day. The tail wags are softer, the smiles slower—but the joy is every bit as real. These moments remind them they’re still thriving, still cherished, and never alone. At Walking Wet Noses Dog Walking & Pet Sitting, we treasure these walks as more than exercise — they’re shared moments of trust, gratitude, and love that keep both hearts and paws moving forward together.

If you’re traveling or working long hours, explore how our Pet Sitting Visits provide comfort and companionship for senior pets while you’re away.

Why Hire a Professional Dog Walker for a Senior Dog

As our pets begin to age, issues with mobility and stiffness may become part of their daily lives. But it doesn’t have to slow them down!

Stretching is Priceless

Proper stretching can help our dogs release stiffness, soreness, aches and discomfort. If you have an athletic dog or a large to giant breed dog, stretching is even more critical!

“An arthritic joint can stiffen up and some range-of-motion exercises can help preserve function, as well as decrease pain.”

(Veterinarian Christina Fuoco, medical director at Philadelphia’s Whole Animal Gym)

Daily stretching can help alleviate:

Joint problems;

Loss of muscle sizes and tone;

Limited range of motion; and

The loss of flexibility.

NOTE: Before implementing any new stretching exercises, consult your veterinarian. It’s vital to understand any limitations or discomfort a K9 may be feeling especially in the presence of arthritis. Together, you can decide on the appropriate amount of activity.

4 Easy K9 Stretches

Stretching does not have to be elaborate or barely stretch?

“One of the best ‘stretches’ is actually just moving the joint through range-of-motion and not putting significant tension on the muscles,” – Dr. Fuoco explains.

All stretches should be gentle, not overextend nor cause additional discomfort. Never force your dog to cooperate.

Moving each joint through its normal range-of-motion offers significant benefits by:

Warming the joint fluid; and

Improving the blood flow to joints and muscles offering healing and less pain.

The Play Bow

The bow is common dog body language to initiate play with each other and their humans. The chest is low to the ground, front legs stretched out in front and the butt high in the air.

This stretch is perfect after walks or rigorous activity because it stretches not only the back but also groin muscles which can be overworked if the dog has any knee injuries.

Want your dog to do the play bow? Do it yourself and he’ll probably imitate you!

The Hip Flexion

If your senior dog is experiencing hip problems, this stretch can help!

Have your dog lie on their side, place your palm over the upper back leg bone (to support the joint).

Put your other hand under the leg lifting it parallel to the floor.

Gently bend the knee and slowly guide the leg along the dog’s body until there is resistance.

Hold for 20 to 30 seconds and release.

Repeat 2 to 3 times each leg each day.

The Sit and Stand

Sometimes owners will stop asking their senior pups to sit. Actually, this may make things worse.

Unless your dog shows regular signs of resistance or aggression, it’s important to keep these joints regularly moving. According to Dr. Fuoco, “sitting and rising to a stand is a wonderful active exercise to help improve the range of motion in the hips and knees.”

The Back Stretch

The goal is to have your dog bend their body into a “c” shape.

Have your dog stand in front of you and stand behind their tail.

Guide their head back with their favorite treat.

Slowly move the treat in a curved motion toward their tail (while keeping their back legs in place.)

Repeat a few times in both directions daily.

Doing regular and consistent stretches will help with your dog’s overall physical and mental quality of life! Don’t wait until your dog begins to show signs of discomfort, stiffness or pain (they often hide it!), make it part of their daily routine long before that happens!

Cities throughout the United States will be hosting events on September 21st highlighting the critical need to end all inhumane commercial dog breeding facilities known as puppy mills or puppy farms.

The Ugly Facts

According to The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), there are an estimated 10,000 active puppy mills in this country.

According to the National Puppy Mill Project, there are:

800,000 breeding dogs in puppy mills today.

40,000 puppies being born every seven days (2 million puppies each year) in these breeding “factories.”

The Horrific Truth

The breeding dogs and their puppies live without the basics:

Proper/safe housing (small cages are often stacked, exposed to the outside elements and often contain dead/dying dogs);

Proper food/clean water;

Proper socialization;

Proper grooming/cleanliness;

Proper veterinarian care; or

Proper exercise. Most dogs will only leave their cages to be bred.

Did You Know?

99% of puppies sold in pet stores come from puppy mills according to an undercover HSUS investigation.

Don’t be fooled. These puppies are not better quality or healthier! In fact, they are often sold with false paperwork concealing any health issues.

The Amish operate some of the most prolific puppy mills in the U.S. as a large part of their community’s economy.

Over a 5-year span (2007-2011), over ,479 complaints were received by the HSUS!

Shockingly, these complaints revealed 40% of puppy mill puppies contracted diseases like pneumonia and parvovirus; and 34% had inherited defects! Even sadder, the HSUS believes these complaints are only a small fraction nationwide.

Infectious diseases (parvovirus and canine distemper)

Ear issues (infections and mites)

The most common inherited defects reported in puppy mill puppies:

Seizures

Heart and liver defects and diseases

Hip, elbow or knee disorders

Blindness, cherry eye and cataracts

Deafness

7 Things You Can Do TODAY!

NEVER buy from a pet store! When you do, you are actively supporting and perpetuating this inhumane, multi-billion-dollar American industry. The reality is, as long as there is a demand for these puppies, the horrific puppy mills and farms will continue to exist.

Petition your lawmakers (local, state and federal) to legislate stronger laws and oversight to stop the cruel treatment happening every day in our nation’s commercial puppy mills. Call or email your:

Senators;

Congressmen;

City Council Members; and

State Attorney Generals

3. Educate your friends, family and neighbors. Encourage them to adopt a homeless dog instead of buying a puppy from a pet store, irresponsible backyard breeder, internet websites, flea markets or newspaper ads.

4. If you suspect a puppy has come from a puppy mill or farm, contact your local law enforcement or animal charity immediately and make a report.

5. Don’t buy any products at pet stores that sell puppies.

6. Donate, fundraise or volunteer with a local animal welfare group.

No matter what kind of pet shares their life with you, at some point you’re probably going to need help in caring for them. Whether it’s a daily drop-in and walk, or pet sitting while you’re out of town, you should always use a professional pet sitter or dog walker whether you’re in Fairfax, Virginia or any other city.

Keep reading to learn why.

5 Benefits a Pet Care Professional Guarantees

It can be tempting to entrust your pet to a friend, family member or even the next-door neighbor. But should you?

When inviting someone into your home to take care of your pet, it’s important to feel safe and secure in the knowledge you are using a true professional.

Don’t be fooled by platforms offering cheaper services; cheaper is not always better especially when it comes to trusting your private space and pet in someone else’s care! The old saying, “you get what you pay for” is still true today! Besides, do you really want to take a chance with your home or pet?

Here’s what you should expect from a professional pet sitter or dog walker:

Professionals will be licensed, bonded and insured protecting you, your home and your pet.

Professionals will be background checked.

Professionals will be certified in Pet First Aid and CPR.

Professionals will have a variety of experience in handling all kinds, breeds and sizes of pets, including yours. Remember, there is no substitute for good old-fashioned experience. There is no book or course equal to hands-on experience. A pet expert knows what to look for when it comes to your pet’s well-being and even more importantly, how to handle it!

Pet sitters are your eyes and ears when it comes to addressing any issues in your absence. Curious noses and paws can get pets into trouble when they’re home alone and medical issues can creep up during the day.

Professionals will always keep their appointments and give your pet the attention, exercise and companionship (and even medications) they need on your schedule.

Interview potential professionals in your home (called a “meet-and-greet”) and monitor your pet’s reaction. If your pet is uncomfortable or stays away from the pet care professional, keep looking.

Ask for references and contact them!

Use the pet care professional before an extended trip to make sure it’s a good match for everyone (and your pet).

Schedule services as early as possible for complete peace of mind when you can’t be there. By scheduling early, you won’t have to accept just anyone because your trusted sitter/walker is busy.

Take the time to find the paw-fect pet sitter or dog walker for you and your pet. By hiring the right professional, your pet’s well-being, comfort and safety will be ensured!

Each year, approximately 6 million cats and dogs (including purebreds) enter American shelters according to PETA. Most of these animals are not “bad” animals, they’ve just had “bad luck.” Clear the Shelters: The Success Rate Over the past several years, rescues and shelters across America and Puerto Rico have waived or reduced pet adoption fees in order to find new homes for homeless pets during the annual Clear the Shelters campaign. From dogs to cats, rabbits to guinea pigs and even birds have found new beginnings. In fact, homes for over 255,529 homeless pets have been found during this one-day event since its inception! Last year’s event alone helped over 100,000 animals find new homes through the 1,200 shelters and rescues who participated. This year, 1,400 shelters (in 160 NBCUniversal and Telemundo-owned TV station markets) are registered to participate; including the very first animal shelter in the United States, the Women’s Animal Center or WAC in Philadelphia founded in 1869! Clear the Shelters: NOT Just for Animals Yes, giving a homeless pet a new lease on life is priceless!
This year, 1,400 shelters (in 160 NBCUniversal and Telemundo-owned TV station markets) are registered to participate; including the very first animal shelter in the United States, the Women’s Animal Center or WAC in Philadelphia founded in 1869!

Clear the Shelters: NOT Just for Animals

Yes, giving a homeless pet a new lease on life is priceless! But, adopting a pet benefits the adopter perhaps even more!

Consider this heartwarming story.

A year ago, Bailey, a long-haired Chihuahua puppy mix, was adopted at the Clear the Shelters event after being found as a stray in Huntington Beach, California. For a former Marine helicopter gunner and his wife Joann, Bailey is paying it back in spades to her new family.

Along with 2 other rescue pups in their home, Bailey offers emotional support to veteran Don Winderman. “They sense when you’re not feeling good,” he said. “It just isn’t about saving their life, it’s also about what that animal gives its owner,” Don explains. “The love that these dogs give you is worth it.”

ADOPT … Not Shop

Not sure if YOU should adopt a homeless pet? Make a real difference with the 7 reasons below!

When you adopt a shelter or rescue pet, you’re saving two lives; the pet that has found a new home and the new one that will take its place.

When you buy a pet from a pet store, you are supporting inhumane puppy mills focused only on profit.

Your tax dollars are being used to impound, shelter, euthanize and dispose of millions of homeless animals each year.

Most rescue dogs are housetrained and have some basic training.

Vaccinations, microchipping and spaying or neutering are usually included in your

Most people do not need an over-priced purebred dog from a breeder; especially when millions of pets (even purebreds) are looking for their fur-ever home.

Adopting a homeless pet saves them from an uncertain future and potential euthanasia. (According to the ASPCA, approximately 1.5 million animals are euthanized each year – 860,000 cats and 670,000 dogs.)
